1931 Herreshoff 32’ Sloop, US $49,990, Austin, TX USA

DESCRIPTION

This 1931 Herreshoff HMCo# 1204 is the forerunner to the H23 Fishers Island boat first built in 1938. Designed by Sydney Herreshoff, SILVER HEELS is one of only 14 of these sloops built and is sailing with her original Marconi rig. She has recently been through a comprehensive restoration, with a focus on the ability for single-handed sailing.

Her decks were removed and replaced with two layers of marine plywood, 3/8” fiberglass, and epoxy resin reinforced between each ply.  She also has all new teak decks, ½” x 2” strips, laid over the entire deck, bedded in epoxy.   Her hull was stripped to raw wood and replaced with two layers of fiberglass 1708 13 oz. (biaxial) and 11oz. bedded in epoxy resin.  All her brightwork was stripped to bare wood and new varnish was applied. A new mahogany grate was installed as flooring. She also sports polished bronze Harken Classic self-tailing winches (40.2ST) and comes with a new custom loadmaster 35’ dual axle trailer.

Maynard Bray wrote about SILVER HEELS: “These long, narrow, easily driven hulls combined with small, efficient rigs were a European concept, introduced to this country by NGH's son L. Francis. The idea was to obtain the fastest possible boat for a given sail area. The boats designed to the Baltic-originated Scharenkreuzer Rule were strikingly handsome and comparatively inexpensive, and by the late 1920s German- and Swedish-built 22- and 30-Square-Meter sloops began showing up in New England harbors, with organized fleets in Northeast Harbor, Maine, and Marblehead, Massachusetts. L. Francis, in his enthusiasm for the Scharenkreuzers, went on to design others himself and to promote the type through magazine articles and correspondence. With 225 square feet of sail area, SILVER HEELS is of the 22-Square-Meter genre.”
