1953 Herreshoff 36’ Nereia Ketch, USD $39,995, San Francisco, CA
PATIENCE is an authentic L. Francis Herreshoff designed 36’ Nereia Ketch built by Chaulker and White at Wilmington Boat Works in Wilmington California in 1953. The Nereia Ketch was described in L.F. Herreshoff’s “Sensible Cruising Designs” book as “A proper little ship” and was one of his favorite designs. Designed along the lines of TICONDEROGA, TIOGA, BRIGADOON, ARAMINTA, etc., she is a heavy, stable, dry and comfortable vessel and very fast for her class, size and displacement. The current owners have enjoyed PATIENCE for years, living aboard, sailing regularly on San Francisco bay, delta and California coast. PATIENCE has been a regular participant (and several time class winner) in the Master Mariners Regatta and Wooden Boat Shows continuously between the mid 60s to the late 80s. Among the numerous projects they have completed are repair/replacement of 30 hull frames, and refastening of roughly 30% of the hull planking. The hull is sound and does not leak more than a drop. She has been under a covered berth for five years, the rig has been refinished and restored and is ready to be stepped. PATIENCE is as close to the original design and specifications as you will find in a Nereia of any age, with a combination of sawn and laminated oak frames, silicon bronze fastened Port Orford cedar planking. External ballast is 12,000 pounds of poured lead, fastened directly to the floors and “let-in” planking at the garboard, thus no deadwood or keelson to rot out. Solid teak decks need some repair and restoration. Spars are hollow square box Sitka Spruce. 99% of the hardware on PATIENCE is original, either manufactured specifically from the plans, or licensed to Wilcox Crittenden and/or Merriman by Herreshoff for production. All hull, deck fastenings, deck and spar hardware are silicon bronze. A large amount of hardwood lumber is also included in the sale.
PATIENCE is not currently powered or rigged, but probably 80% of the way towards completion and a great value for someone ready and willing to complete the final stages of engine and rigging.
