1910 44’ B.B. Crowninshields Schooner, US $115,000, Port Townsend, WA, USA

DESCRIPTION
FAME was the personal yacht of B.B. Crowninshield, an American naval architect who specialized in the design of racing yachts. She was launched July 12th, 1910 by the Rice Brothers Company in East Boothbay, Maine.   FAME was a sister ship to the well-known FORTUNE a 50’ schooner built in 1925 and also designed by B.B. Crowninshield. FAME was restored by Dennis Conner in 2010 for her centennial birthday at a cost of $400,000. FAME comes with two sailing rigs; a Marconi Stay Sail Rig and Gaff Rig.

HISTORY
Records show that in designing FAME, Crowninshield wanted to create “the largest and fastest boat he could handle and take care of alone; one that would lie quietly at the mooring with sails up; a strong, light and comfortable boat in a seaway.” FAME was moored off Crowninshield’s estate on Peach’s Point, Marblehead, MA and spent her early years in Massachusetts before being sold to new owners in Chicago. FAME’s second owner was Theodore (Ted) M. Dunlap, who in partnership with Fred W. Weston purchased her in 1926. Three Lake Michigan clubs have named trophies after FAME and she is well known along its shores. She spent ninety years on the Great Lakes, dominating the racing scene for several decades. In 2009, FAME was purchased by America’s Cup-winning skipper, Dennis Conner. She was shipped to San Diego where she underwent a complete restoration by Koehler Kraft, San Diego in under 100 days, just in time to celebrate her centennial birthday.
