AUREA, 1939 Herreshoff 12 1/2, USD $19,000, New London, CT

DESCRIPTION
One of Herreshoff’s most popular designs, generation after generation of sailors have learned to sail on these capable little sloops since the first of the class was launched in 1914. AUREA – HMCo #1489 – was built in 1939 for the commodore of Riverside Yacht Club on Eastern Long Island. She was completely rebuilt in 1989 and her hull was replanked with mahogany. Since then, many upgrades have been done: transom replaced; keel, stem, and transom knee replaced; deadwood replaced; garboard planks replaced with cedar; floor replaced; new canvas deck covering; new poop deck planking and frame; new jib boom; new tiller; new center seat supports; and oar mounts replaced. AUREA sports the original mast and boom, and original deck cleat. She comes complete with a new set of 2021 sails which have been used fewer than 20 times, and includes the old set as backup. The seller has owned AUREA for forty years and has been her conservator. He hopes to find someone with the same dedication to her stewardship.
