On an recent warm December day, three classic Herreshoff beauties met up on Narragansett Bay, a serendipitous encounter vividly captured by nautical photographer Cory Silken.
They were two newly restored 1919 S-Boats – PAPOOSE #831 (center) and SQUAW #835 (left) – and the 1951 Herreshoff Ketch ARION (right). The combined age of these three boats is just under 250 years!
Of the 94 S-Boats built at the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company between 1919 and 1941, PAPOOSE & SQUAW (ex-KAJEE) represent two from the first order placed in 1919.
ARION came from the drawing board of Sidney Herreshoff and was built in Warren R.I. by the Anchorage Plastics Corporation in 1951. This 42-foot ketch was the first large auxiliary yacht to be built using fiberglass, crafted especially for Commodore Verner Reed of the IDA Lewis Yacht Club.
